Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Museum Lab

Between 2022 and 2024, I worked with Larissa Petrillo, Ph.D., of the Anthropology Department and the Office of the Provost & Vice-President, Academic at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, to develop and deliver the following Work-Integrated Learning Museum Lab courses:

  • Contemporary Museum Practices: Conservation and Curation of Cultural Heritage

  • Museum Lab Practicum Placement

Approximately 40 students participated in the Museum Lab, gaining and applying arts, culture, and heritage sector-specific knowledge and experience. Students were placed with partner organizations located across the Lower Mainland of BC, working alongside industry professionals, gaining valuable skills and mentorship.

Several students continue to volunteer with their partner organizations and/or have found employment in the sector following completion of these courses.

Ancestral Belongings Analysis and Stewardship

Since the summer of 2025, I’ve had the honour to document, analyze, and research a collection of ancestral lithic and historic belongings recovered along the stɑl’əw̓/stó:lō/Fraser River. These belongings have been stewarded by a q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) First Nation family living on the southern side of stɑl’əw̓/stó:lō/Fraser River over the course of the past century.

This project is a way to support reclamation of ancestral q̓ic̓əy̓ knowledge, learning more about the activities that have taken place on the lands and waters, and the interactions that occurred between different communities, both First Nations and Settler, up and down the stɑl’əw̓/stó:lō/Fraser River. It is a clear example of the grounding connection belongings have to place and the sense of identity they provide when they remain in community rather than in an academic institution or colonial museum.
